This week, new sources reported that a wrongful death lawsuit between Dane County and the family members of a murdered UW-Madison student was settled. Under the recent personal injury settlement, Dane County will contribute $5,000 to the 5,000 to the Brittany Zimmermann reward fund. The County will also give $2,500 to the family's lawyer.
Prior to the settlement, the family had filed their claim against Dane County, the county executive, and a former 911 operator. The family said that the 21-year-old victim had used her cell phone to call 911 for help before her murder in 2008, but was disconnected during her phone call. When police were later called to her apartment her body was found stabbed and strangled to death.
The County said that it, "believes the settlement is in the public interest, as it provides resolution for the family and community, and saves further expense from ongoing litigation."
At this time, the search for Zimmerman's murderer continues and authorities say they have not yet identified any suspects in the case.
