Members of the Orange County Fire Department were busy last week responding to a car accident on Florida's turnpike.
Around 6 p.m. a motorcycle collided with another vehicle, pinning the motorcyclist under the tandem axles of a semi-tractor and trailer. Both vehicles were traveling southbound just south of Orange Blossom Trail when the car accident happened. While emergency medical crews attempted to treat the man pinned under the truck, specialized equipment was used to lift the massive vehicle off the cyclist. Among this equipment was a wrecker able to lift heavy duty vehicles up to 20,000 pounds.
Once it arrived the wrecker was able to lift the front of the semi-trailer until the axles were off of the man and emergency crews could safely extract him. In total it took 70 minutes for emergency crews to remove the trapped man. He was then taken by helicopter to Orlando Regional Medical Center. However, the Florida Turnpike was shut down for three hours to clear the accident.
